Shields were considered sacred objects and were believed to bring good luck to the owner.

This is an authentic limited edition creation by master artisan Greg Flys With Eagles.

 This particular Spirit Shield incorporates the mask as well.

The mask represents protection, wisdom, healing, and spirituality.

This large spirit shield respectfully pays homage to the Oglala Sioux holy man, Black Elk. It symbolizes the Sacred Pipe and Black Elk's Account of the Seven Rites of the Oglala Sioux nation. He was Heyoka and a second cousin of Crazy Horse. Black Elk participated, at about the age of twelve, in the Battle of Little Big Horn of 1876, and was injured in the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890. Black Elk traveled to England with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, an unpleasant experience he later described in his book, Black Elk Speaks. He also claimed to have had visions in which he met the spirit that guided the universe. This shield is made from a full deer hide, (may vary from picture.)

The Kachinas were spirits associated with the annual cycle of birth, death and rebirth.

 Sunface (Tawa) Katsina represents the spirit of the sun. This leader of ceremonies brings  warmth, shelter

 for the old, a bright future, and playfulness for the young and is considered one of  the more powerful

 Katsinam because the Sun is thought to be the brightest and largest of all the stars  essential to life and growth.

This very special shield is an offering to our ancestors  Driven from their land in 1838. Cherokee removal

—the Trail of Tears—remains one of the greatest tragedies that the United States has inflicted upon a minority

population. Removal and  assimilation, however, remained incomplete. Remnants of the tribe comprise the Eastern Bank

of Cherokees today and many  are preserving traditional culture and language. The tears this spirit shield incorporates

are dentalium & cowrie shells. The feathers, beadwork, & medicine wheel feature the 4-colors of creation:

RED - because the red man was here first

WHITE - followed by the whites

BLACK - our African relations were introduced

YELLOW - The yellow man came from Asia

The four colors mixed together are brown,

 the color of the earth and other peoples.

When a young man went away for his first vision quest he might be visited by

 the spirit of the bear which would become his medicine or spiritual guardian.

 The bear symbolizes strength and the bone claws at the base of this shield are

 a symbol of a brave, successful hunter.

The bear totem shield came about as a commission for a young man who had a debilitating chronic disease.

 The mother had said that the boy likes bears and so the inspiration came naturally.     Hoka Hay young man !
