Shields were painted by the Holy men of the tribe and depicted the visionary beings and animals

that provided the owner with mystic protection and guidance. This highly collectible work comes

with a signed and numbered personal legend card depicting the particular era, tribe, and origin.

 

 

 

 

Dakota Sioux Shield

This Dakota Sioux shield features dew claws and scalp locks

 signifying its owner's special honors in battle. It is adorned

 with many eagle feathers earned for brave deeds, and is

covered with buffalo tracks. American Indians held the

buffalo in high esteem because it gave all for the people.

At the top of the shield is the crescent moon.

Cheyenne Warrior Shield 

This shield is a replica of a Southern Cheyenne warrior Little Rock,

 who was chief Black Kettle's second-in-command. It was captured by

 General Custer at the battle of Wachita in 1868. It features the Thunderbird

surrounded by smaller birds, which stand for powers of swiftness and agility.

Above lies the crescent moon, and below the seven stars of Pleiades. It is painted

 traditionally with earth-paints and features hand-painted eagle and fallen feathers.

Sioux Thunderbird Shield

 

 

This shield is a replica of Sioux warrior Short Bull.  It represents the thunderbird, and shows  the power

  of lightning and thunder emanating from its wings.  The cut feathers signify scalps taken during battle.

If you look closely during the dance scene in Dances With Wolves the movie , you will see this shield.

Grizzly Bear Shield

The dominant red paw represents the grizzly warding off enemy fire while protecting other bears

 represented by the smaller paws. Ambitious plains warriors recognized the strength and courage of the

grizzly  and sought to acquire some of its power for themselves in dreams and visions.
