Tatanka, The Buffalo

Buffalo Medicine black high rez.jpg

Buffalo were the lords of the prairie. Every part  of tatanka, the buffalo, was useful to the

Native American people. For the buffalo supplied virtually everything that the people needed to

stay alive; food, clothing, tools, and housing.  Including his religious use as an intermediary through which

the Great Spirit could be addressed, and by which the Spirit often spoke to the people. In short, the

buffalo was life to the Plains Indians.  Societies named after the buffalo had the animal as their patron.

Its spirit was praised before every hunt with a tribal ritual dance. Skull - ceremonies, sun dance, prayer

Traditional Bird Flute

Tribal art 2 147.jpg

Through song, the people maintain their spiritual relationship with creator. native tradition tells that the flute

is a living thing & the spirit of the animals & trees from which the instrument is made, live in the flute.

The instrument was originally very personal; its music was played in courtship, healing, meditation, and spiritual rituals.

There are many stories about how different peoples discovered the flute. A common character in these stories is

the woodpecker, which put holes in the hollow branches while searching for termites. The wind would blow

around these branches, creating sounds that the people noticed and sought to recreate.
